  Directory submission and social bookmarking are the two oldest tactics in off-page SEO, and the two most argued about. One camp says they died with Penguin in 2012. The other still sells packages of five hundred submissions. Both are wrong, in different directions. The short answer: neither tactic moves rankings on its own in 2026. Most links from both are nofollow, and Google has said plainly that link volume is not what it once was.
